Ambuluwawa

Ambuluwawa

The backyard mountain of Gampola is Ambuluwawa, which is often spelled Ambuluvava in the highlands of Sri Lanka. The Ambuluwawa mountain in Sri Lanka's Mahaweli river valley is home to a new tourist destination that includes a biodiversity complex, Sri Lanka's first multi-religious sanctuary, a Hindu Kovil, a Muslim Mosque, and a Christian Chapel in addition to several Buddhist shrines, at an elevation of 1087 above sea level and 700 meters above Gampola town. A huge winding tower that resembles a stylised Buddhist stupa is the distinguishing feature of the Ambuluawa temple complex. Also being cared for here is a sapling of the Anuradhapura Bo-tree.

By road, Ambuluwawa is 5.5 kilometers from Gampola's town center. Hemmathagama road splits off into a 1.5 km-long access road that is winding and occasionally quite steep and leads to the Ambuluwawa summit.

Dissanayake Mudiyanselage Jayaratne, also known as "Di Mu," a former prime minister of Sri Lanka who was born close to Gampola, opened the Ambuluwawa Biodiversity Center. The Ambuluwawa Development and Conservation Authority looks after the refuge.
